Bird Watching 101 - April 14, 2012

Bring binoculars and wear shoes appropriate for walking on trails.  Must provide your own transportation from Zane State College to Dillon State Park.  Minimum age 16.

The first lesson in the Bird Watching 101 series. This class will introduce beginning birders to equipment, books, basic bird identification, and field techniques. The class will begin with a classroom session and finish with a guided bird walk at Dillon State Park.  Bring binoculars and wear shoes appropriate for walking on trails.  For more information, contact Gary King at (740) 624-4343 or gking@zanestate.edu

Scott Albaugh has been birding in Ohio for 20 years. He is the Regional Coordinator for the Ohio Breeding Bird Atlas 2, Vice President of the Greater Mohican Audubon Society and has led numerous field trips for the Ohio Ornithological Society. Scott found the Common Raven in Jefferson County, Ohio in 2006 which later led to the discovery of the first nesting ravens in Ohio in over 100 years. He has a Master's degree from Marshall University in Herpetology, and is a Wildlife Field Biology Instructor at Zane State College.

Digital Photography Workshop - April 19, 26 and May 3, 2012

This three-session workshop is for anyone who wants to learn how to take better pictures.  Whether you are completely new to photography or have some experience but would like to take your photography to a higher level, this class will help you.  You'll learn how to avoid common mistakes and shoot pictures that are more interesting, dramatic and artistic.  We will  take the mystery out of your camera's controls.  Topics covered will include creative composition, selective focus, special effects, depth-of-field, stop-action, night photography, cropping, sizing and more.  There will be fun photographic assignments for you to complete between classes.  Any digital point-and-shoot or DSLR camera will work for this class (except camera phones).  Please bring your camera to the first class.  For more information, contact Gary King at (740) 624-4343 or gking@zanestate.edu

Nothing is better than the perfect dessert!  Join Betsy Skrobot, Baking Instructor at Zane State College, and learn the ins and outs of souffles and biscotti. Working in pairs, participants will create their own desserts. Beginning Dog Obedience - Three Sessions Available
Session 1:  Mondays/Wednesdays, May 7 through May 23, 2012
Session 2:  Monday/Thursday, July 9 through July 26, 2012 
Session 3:  Monday/Wednesday, September 10 through September 26, 2012

Class Requirements:  All participants need a 6 foot nylon or leather lead; a chain correction (choker) collar; and dogs must be at least 4 months old.  It is also recommended that all dogs be up to date on vaccinations for their own protection.

Owner of Stone Bluff Kennels, Lancy Lawyer will instruct participants on basic dog obedience commands.  Mr. Lawyer will help participants teach their dog basic techniques such as 'sit' and 'stay' through demonstration and instruction.  There will also be opportunities for questions/discussion about behavioral issues and training techniques.  Mr. Lawyer is a knowledgeable and personable instructor with over 20 years experience in dog training. Mountain Dulcimer Workshop - October 20, 2012

People who live in the Appalachian Region of the United States have played the mountain dulcimer for decades.  Come learn to play this wonderful three stringed American instrument.  Participants 9 through 99+ will receive their own mountain dulcimer to take home and will learn to play at least 10 songs on the dulcimer.  No prior musical training or experience is necessary.  If you have never played an instrument before, this workshop is for you!  For more information, contact Gary King at (740) 624-4343 or gking@zanestate.edu

This two hour workshop will teach participants 9 through 99+ to play the harmonica.  We will explore how to read harmonica music; how to play the intrument; and how to translate any song into harmonica tablature so that you can play it on the harmonica.  Participants will receive their own harmonica to take home and will leave the workshop having played at least 10 songs.  No prior musical training is necessary.  For more information, contact Gary King at (740) 624-4343 or gking@zanestate.edu

People who live in the Pacific Islands have played the ukulele for decades.  Portuguese sailors who played the ukulele spread the instrument throughout the pacific.  Workshop goers will learn to play this wonderful four stringed instrument.  Participants  will receive their own ukulele to take home and will learn to play at least 7 songs on the ukulele.  Participants will learn to strum the instrument properly; tune the ukulele in both standard and open tuning; and learn how to read a chord chart.  No prior musical training or experience is necessary.   For more information, contact Gary King at (740) 624-4343 or gking@zanestate.edu
